WOLFRAM WORKSHOP PART 1: Beyond Generative AI

Going Beyond Generative AI: why Hybrid AI represents the next frontier of AI

Wednesday 14 May , 2.00pm – 3.15pm

Newcastle University Business School, 8th Floor, 5 Barrack Road, Newcastle upon Tyne
NE1 4SE

Wolfram Research is the organisation behind Mathematica and Wolfram|Alpha and has been at the forefront of computational science and innovation for over three decades. Their work bridges cutting-edge technology and accessible tools for education, research, and industry.

While most of the headlines have tended to focus on Generative AI, Wolfram’s Jon McLoone joins us at Thinking Digital for a practical and insightful session exploring the three core paradigms of AI—Symbolic AI, Machine Learning, and Generative AI.

Using real-world examples such as wine quality prediction, financial research, and email triage, Jon will demonstrate how each AI model works, where they shine, and where they fall short. He’ll introduce the concept of Hybrid AI—an approach that combines the strengths of all three—and show how it can open up powerful new possibilities.

This session will include a live case study of an intelligent research assistant to demonstrate how Hybrid AI can deliver better results across sectors.

We’ll cover:

  • The key differences between Symbolic, Machine Learning, and Generative AI
  • Real-world applications of each approach
  • When and why to use Hybrid AI
  • Use cases across research, analysis, and automation
  • Key risks and limitations to keep in mind

(If you wish to take part in both Wolfram AI workshops, you’ll need to register for both.)
