Mark Schenk

An Origami-Inspired Engineer

You probably wouldn’t put origami and space exploration in the same sentence but Dr. Mark Schenk would! And he’s coming to Thinking Digital to show us the fascinating and innovative link between the two.

Mark’s talk will explore the unexpected intersections between origami, (the traditional Japanese art of paper folding), and the world of cutting-edge science and engineering.

He’ll show how origami techniques are revolutionising various scientific fields, from the creation of self-assembling robots to the design of advanced materials and large deployable structures for space exploration.

Through insightful examples and analysis, Mark’s talk will unveil the fundamental principles of origami and its profound impact on scientific and engineering advancements.

Mark Schenk is an Associate Professor in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol, working within the Bristol Composites Institute.

Previously, he held positions as a post-doctoral researcher in deployable structures at the Surrey Space Centre at the University of Surrey, and with the Advanced Structures Group at the Cambridge University Engineering Department.
